Frequently asked questions.

Where can I purchase Jeanette’s mixes?

Currently, Jeanette’s mixes are sold at Adams Fairacre Farms in their Wappingers and Poughkeepsie locations and at Fishkill Farms in Hopewell Junction, NY.

Why do the pouch directions recommend using unsalted butter?

There is already salt added to the mix so using butter without salt will provide you with the best flavor.

Is there a certain kind of butter that is better than others for baking?

Grade AA butter, with its mild flavor and smooth texture, is the best for baking.  It has a slightly lower butterfat content than its European counterpart which can leave baked goods with a greasy but also drier consistency.

Are the chocolate chips included in the pouch with the mix?

Yes, chocolate chips are included.  The only ingredients you need to add are egg and butter.

If I follow a dairy free or vegan diet, can I still use Jeanette’s mixes?

Yes, there are many egg and butter alternatives that can be used in place of the egg and butter that are recommended on the pouch instructions.  Egg alternatives can be found in both powder and liquid forms.  Some brands that work well are Bob’s Red Mill Egg Replacer and JUST egg Plant-based egg.  Ground flax seed combined with water also works great as an egg replacement.  One tablespoon of ground flax seed combined with 2.5 tablespoons of water is equivalent to one egg.

Plant-based butters can also be found at grocery stores and work well.  They do contain some ingredients that may trigger nut allergies so always check the ingredients before using them.  Additional alternatives to butter that can be used in a 1:1 ratio are a dairy free plain or vanilla yogurt, applesauce, avocado, and pumpkin puree.  The additional alternatives mentioned above will produce a softer and more cake-like result than the plant-based butters but are equally delicious!

Please note that the chocolate chips that are included with the mixes contain dairy, but they are sealed in their own separate package and can be easily substituted with a dairy free chip of your choosing.

Do I need to bake the entire mix at one time?

It is recommended that you bake the whole mix to obtain the best results.  If you do not need the entire batch of cookies, blondies, or brownies at one time, you can easily freeze the baked goods for future enjoyment!  For the best results, let the baked products cool completely.  Then store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to six months.

Are the baked cookies crispy or soft?

Both the oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies can be baked to your liking.  If you like your cookies to be soft and chewy, bake according to pouch directions.  If you prefer them on the crispier side, bake them a little longer than the recommended time.

To keep cookies soft, store them in an airtight plastic or glass container.  You can place a piece of white bread in the container with the cookies, as they will absorb the bread’s moisture and keep them fresh.  Cookies can also be softened right before eating them by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwaving them for about 10 seconds.

To keep cookies crisp, cool cookies completely before storing.  Put them in a glass container with a tight-fitting lid and store them in the refrigerator.  You can additionally put a few tablespoons of baking soda in a coffee filter.  Close the filter with a clip or twist tie and place it into the container with the cookies.  The baking soda will absorb moisture and the coffee filter will help to circulate the air so the baking soda can do its thing!  Cookies can also be re-crisped right before eating them by baking them on a wire rack in a 300-degree F oven for a few minutes.
